Eco Action 2008 – THINK & ACT

2008-01-05
Commemorated on June 5 each year, the World Environment Day (WED) is one of the main platforms through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness for the environment. The WED slogan selected for the year 2008 is “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”

Throughout the world, organisations and individuals who are passionate about making a difference to the environment will pledge actions that they will undertake on this special day.

In Singapore, the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and Ricoh Asia Pacific came together last year to inaugurate “Eco Action 2007”. This activity was registered as an official WED Day event in Singapore under United Nations Environmental Program, and was endorsed by United Nations Association of Singapore. This initiative is also supported by the National Environment Agency, National Parks Board, Building and Construction Authority, and the Energy Market Authority. 18 companies participated last year and collectively saved a total of 5912.34 kWh of electricity.

This year, SEC and Ricoh aims to reach out to more companies to go green on June 5, 2008 for “Eco Action 2008” with the launch of an event website www.ecoaction.sg. Believed to be the first of its kind in Singapore, Eco Action seeks to improve awareness among the people in Singapore about energy conservation and climate change.

Mr. Howard Shaw, Executive Director of SEC, said “We are very inspired by the recent wave of high-strung actions and pledges by various cities and well-known figures around the world. Therefore, we feel that we could also re-enact it on our own shores by garnering the interest of offices and corporations.”

Participating organisations will have to pledge their commitment to reduce their energy consumption on June 5 by delineating the actions they will take to tackle carbon emissions. They will also need to submit a post-activity report with accompanying pictures as proofs of their eco-actions to both organisers.

SEC and Ricoh believe that individual contribution of each organisation may seem insignificant, but when combined, the aggregate efforts by all participants will lead to a meaningful difference.

Stressing upon the need for corporate responsibility in mitigating the climate change phenomenon, Mr. Shaw also added, “The onset of the climate change phenomenon is no longer in doubt. What is important is for all of us to band together and take actions to mitigate global warming. Organisational eco-actions represent one of the most effective avenues.”

“Ricoh staff worldwide is imbued with a strong sense of caring for our earth. Thus our Eco Action on the World Environment Day is just a reaffirmation of Ricoh’s commitment to environmental conservation,” says Mr. Nobuaki Majima, Managing Director of Ricoh Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. “This year’s contribution is our second challenge and definitely will sustain for the future.”

Mr. Vincent Lim, Managing Director, Ricoh Singapore Pte Ltd, added “Resource conservation is a task that we are unable to achieve alone. As a corporate citizen, Ricoh will continue to participate in environmental programs to alert the public about the importance of energy conservation and climate change.”

Although WED only takes place once a year, both SEC and Ricoh Asia Pacific certainly hope that meaningful actions for the climate are not confined to that one specific day only, but also for the remaining 364 days of the year.
