Singapore, 2 May 2014 – Singapore’s largest business-led environmental awareness campaign, Eco Action Day, returns this year with a new look and theme to rally both organizations and individuals to pledge actions that are positive for the environment on World Environment Day this 5th June.
“Green the Red Dot, Join the Movement”, launched today by Japanese multinational Ricoh Asia Pacific and various government and private sector partners, calls on businesses and the wider public to join the national movement to green Singapore, also known as the “little red dot”, by pledging simple actions to reduce energy and resource consumption in the office and at home.
This year’s campaign is closely aligned with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Environment Day theme, ‘Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level’.
The UN has designated 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and WED this year shines the spotlight on the urgency to help islands address the growing risks and vulnerabilities arising from climate change.
As a small island state, Singapore faces similar challenges such as rising sea levels, food and water scarcity and extreme weather patterns. It has taken climate mitigation and adaptation measures to protect itself from such effects such as reducing its carbon emissions across different sectors and putting in place minimum reclamation levels to protect the coastline.
It has also set a goal to reduce its carbon emissions by 7 to 11 percent below business-as-usual levels by 2020. This challenging target requires individuals and businesses to be more energy conscious and to make adjustments to their daily activities. These actions can lead to both cost savings as well as a reduction in energy consumption.
Eco Action Day seeks to accelerate this awareness and help Singapore along the sustainable development path. From now till June 5th, organisations and individuals can register their pledges at the new website ecoaction.sg, which also offers tips and ideas on green activities.
The campaign will engage the public through several platforms such as bus advertisements, posters at commercial buildings, online advertising, roadshows and social media. Organisations that go the extra mile with their pledges will also be recognized with the campaign’s Eco Action Awards, which are given out after World Environment Day.
Ms. Masayo Hada, manager of Ricoh Asia Pacific’s regional environmental management group, said of the campaign: “Eco Action Day is a key corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that seeks to raise environmental awareness, especially among businesses. Ricoh believes the combined efforts of all participants will make a meaningful difference.”
Government, private sector and NGO partners of the campaign, now in its eighth year, include the National Climate Change Secretariat, National Environment Agency, Building and Construction Authority, Energy Market Authority, Singapore Environment Council, Singapore Compact for CSR, Singapore Business Federation, Keppel Land, Keppel Reit, Comfort DelGro and Eco-Business.

Individuals and organisations alike can help to address climate change by taking part in Eco Action Day and reducing energy consumption – by using more energy efficient appliances and transport.”

To further commemorate World Environment Day this year, Ricoh and Eco-Business will be hosting the inaugural Eco Action Day Forum on World Environment Day as part of the campaign. It will feature a plenary discussion moderated by Eco-Business editor Jessica Cheam on “Small island states and sustainable development: Singapore’s experience”, where participants will get a chance to interact with an expert panel on the subject.
