Monitoring of Things

The dictionary defines monitoring as “the observance and checking of the progress or quality of something over a period of time; keeping under systematic review”.

Ricoh defines Monitoring of Things (MoT) as the combination of monitoring with the addition of internet connectivity and the use of sensors.

According to these definitions, the minimum components of MoT would be:

  • A physical device
  • An IP address
  • A sensor


WorkPlace Solutions

WorkPlace Solutions is a platform which is:

WorkPlace Solutions provides actionable visual data linked to monitoring results enabling you to have a complete, multifaceted, real-time view of any area or process.

WorkPlace Solutions includes hardware, software and all services needed. It consists of two platforms: Event-based Sensing and Visual Evidence.


Event Sensing

A virtual digital fence is built around a customer-defined area. Each intrusion into this area generates a notification, which is sent to a customer-specified device, such as a cell phone, tablet or PC, along with a video segment associated with the event.

An event is triggered from sensors or other video sources using proprietary “saliency” machine learning algorithms. “Saliency” is the science of focusing on areas of interest while ignoring non-relevant zones. A salient event is one where the sensor picks up a shape outside the normal “learned” background. Videos are only processed and stored when a salient event occurs, therefore decreasing the need for a lot of bandwidth.

Visual Evidence

A trigger from a sensor or video based on saliency algorithms causes a video segment to be generated. As with Event Sensing, the length of the video is defined by the customer, typically around 10 seconds (5 seconds before and 5 seconds after the triggered event). The video segment, along with a notification, is sent to the customer’s device of choice.

The notification/video combination is stored in a time-series database and can be retrieved at any time, providing actionable visual evidence in near real-time.
